Why does quote turnaround matter so much?
Because buyers frequently award to the first credible quote rather than the lowest. Shops that measure it are usually surprised by how many RFQs they lose without ever being compared on price.
Can quoting be automated for custom parts?
Partially. Material and standard operations calculate reliably; complex setups and unusual tolerances need an estimator. The goal is getting the routine eighty percent to a draft the estimator adjusts, not removing them.
Is live job costing realistic in a small shop?
It is once shop floor time is captured against the job rather than against the day. That is the hard part, and it is a floor discipline change as much as a software one.
Do we need a full MRP system?
Most shops under fifty people do not, and the ones that buy one often use a fraction of it. Quoting, job costing and scheduling are the parts that pay for themselves; the rest can wait until the volume genuinely requires it.
