What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of making AI assistants — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google's AI Overviews — mention, cite and recommend your business when people ask them questions. Where SEO competes for a position on a results page, AEO competes for a place inside the answer itself. The levers are different: branded mentions across the web, content freshness, and answer-first formats matter more than backlinks or word count.
What is answer engine optimization?
Why AEO exists
AI assistants answer questions with a short list of names instead of ten blue links. When someone asks ChatGPT "who should I hire to rebuild my CRM" or asks Perplexity "best staffing agency software", the assistant assembles an answer from two sources: what its training data already says about the companies in that space, and what it retrieves from the live web at the moment of the question. A business that is absent from both is simply not part of the answer — there is no page two to be found on.
That makes visibility binary in a way search never was. AEO is the discipline of moving your business from absent to named.
What actually raises your odds of being named
AI citations are probabilistic — ask the same question five times and the sources shift. What raises the probability is measurable. Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands found branded web mentions correlate with AI Overview visibility at 0.664, stronger than backlinks, referring domains or domain rating. YouTube mentions correlated with ChatGPT visibility at 0.737 — the strongest single factor they measured.
Freshness is the second lever: roughly 90% of ChatGPT's most-cited pages had been updated within the year, 76% within thirty days. Length, by contrast, is close to irrelevant — a 0.04 correlation, with 53% of cited pages under 1,000 words. Short, current, and widely mentioned beats long, stale, and obscure every time.
Consensus: many independent sources saying the same thing about you
Freshness: meaningfully updated content, not a date bump
Retrievability: pages an AI crawler can actually read, ranking well enough to be fetched
Format: comparisons, honest guides and answer-first pages get lifted; brochure pages do not
How AEO work looks in practice
The on-site half: answer the questions buyers actually ask, in the first two sentences of the page, in sections that stand alone — because retrieval systems chunk pages arbitrarily and quote fragments. Keep the technical floor solid: AI crawlers allowed in, content readable without JavaScript, structured data intact, and every important page refreshed on a real cadence.
The off-site half is usually worth more: getting your business named in the directories, industry lists, communities and videos that assistants already cite in your category. Only about 28% of AI mentions carry a link — but an unlinked mention still trains the association between your name and your category, and the buyer searches your name afterwards.
AEO, GEO, LLMO — same discipline
You will see the same work sold as AEO (answer engine optimization), GEO (generative engine optimization) and LLMO (large language model optimization). The names differ; the levers do not. What matters is whether the practitioner measures actual assistant answers — who gets named, on which prompts, how that changes month over month — rather than repackaging a classic SEO report.
Is AEO replacing SEO?
No — it sits on top of it. Assistants retrieve heavily from pages that already rank, so classic SEO remains the foundation. But ranking alone no longer guarantees you appear in the answer, and plenty of AI-cited pages rank nowhere near the top ten. You need both.
How do I know if AI assistants mention my business today?
Ask them the questions your customers ask — the category questions, not your brand name — and log who gets named. Do it across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI surfaces separately, several times each, because answers vary per run. That baseline is exactly what an AI visibility audit produces.
How long does AEO take to work?
Retrieval-side changes — fixing crawler access, publishing answer-first pages, earning a mention on a list assistants already cite — can show up in weeks, because assistants fetch the live web. Training-data presence builds over months. Anyone quoting a fixed timeline for someone else's model is guessing.
Does schema markup matter for AEO?
The evidence is mixed. Keep structured data for classic rich results and for making facts about your business unambiguous, but do not expect schema alone to earn citations. Mentions, freshness and answer-first content carry far more weight.
