How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT
Four moves, in order: make sure AI crawlers can read your site at all; publish pages that answer your buyers' questions in the first two sentences; earn mentions on the directories, lists and communities ChatGPT already cites in your category; and refresh it all on a monthly cadence, because cited content is overwhelmingly recent. Off-site mentions are the strongest single lever — this is a reputation game across the whole web, not a tweak to your homepage.
How do I get my business recommended by ChatGPT?
Step one: the technical floor
Before anything creative, confirm assistants can read you. Check robots.txt for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended — about 6% of sites block them, frequently without knowing, and Cloudflare now blocks AI crawlers by default on new setups. Then check what a crawler actually receives: ChatGPT's crawler does not execute JavaScript, so a client-side rendered site serves it a nearly empty shell no matter how rich the page looks in a browser. Server-render or prerender anything you want an assistant to know.
Step two: answer-first pages
Write for the way retrieval works: the direct answer in the first two sentences, then the evidence. Every section self-contained, because assistants quote fragments, not pages. Entities named explicitly — your firm, the product, the number — because "we can help with this" retrieves nothing. And match formats to what demonstrably gets cited: comparisons, honest guides, and pages with original numbers. Length is not the goal; 53% of cited pages run under 1,000 words.
Step three: earn mentions where assistants already look
Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity your category questions and note which third-party pages they cite — directories, "top firms" lists, review sites, Reddit threads, YouTube videos. That citation list is your outreach list. A mention on a page an assistant already trusts moves you further than another page on your own domain.
Do not dismiss unlinked mentions: only around 28% of AI mentions carry a link, but every mention — linked or not — is a training example associating your name with your category. And YouTube deserves specific attention: Ahrefs measured YouTube mentions correlating with ChatGPT visibility at 0.737, the strongest factor in their study.
Step four: the refresh cadence
Roughly 90% of ChatGPT's most-cited pages were updated within the year, 76% within thirty days — and citations churn about 45% between refreshes. Sustained visibility is therefore a cadence, not a project: retest your prompts monthly, meaningfully update the pages that slipped (new numbers, current examples — never a cosmetic date change), and keep the mention pipeline moving. This monthly loop is the substance of a real AEO retainer.
Can I just add my business to ChatGPT somehow?
There is no registry to submit to. The model learns from the public web and retrieves from it live. The only routes in are the ones above — be widely mentioned, be readable, be current — or a labelled ad placement, which is a separate, paid system.
Does my Google ranking still matter?
Yes, as a retrieval path: assistants fetch pages that rank for the subqueries they generate. But it is no longer sufficient — ChatGPT takes only 8–10% of its citations from Google's top ten, so plenty of winners in AI answers are not the winners in classic search.
Should I write a page for every possible prompt?
No. People phrase the same intent ten ways and the assistant expands each into synthetic subqueries you cannot enumerate. Build topic coverage — one strong page per real question, interlinked — rather than a page per phrasing. Doorway pages get filtered, by Google and by common sense.
How do I track whether this is working?
Three layers: monthly prompt testing (who gets named, across platforms, over multiple runs), AI referral traffic in your analytics, and "how did you hear about us" on your intake forms — the last one is where AI-driven revenue actually shows up, since several platforms strip referrer data.
