How to advertise on ChatGPT: the operator's guide
Through OpenAI's ads platform: you create campaigns, write short text-and-image ads, and target by conversation context rather than keywords. Ads appear as labelled placements alongside relevant conversations. We run our own campaigns on the platform, and the honest summary is: the mechanics feel familiar, but targeting by context instead of keywords changes what good creative looks like — and early auctions are far less crowded than mature ad platforms.
How do I advertise on ChatGPT?
What exists today
OpenAI operates a self-serve ads platform for ChatGPT. At the time of writing, an ad unit is compact — a headline around fifty characters, a description around a hundred, and a square image — so the discipline is closer to writing a good newspaper classified than a landing page. Placements are labelled as ads; they are separate from the organic answer, and buying them does not influence what ChatGPT says organically.
The platform reports impressions, clicks and conversions once a pixel is installed, and supports campaign and ad level tracking parameters, so the measurement chain down to a booked call is entirely buildable.
Context hints, not keywords
The platform's targeting is contextual: instead of bidding on keywords, you describe the conversations your buyer is having — in free text. That description is matched against conversation context. It rewards knowing your customer's actual language: the tools they complain about by name, the phrasings of the problem, the questions they ask when they are stuck.
This is the piece most advertisers get wrong, because there is no keyword planner to lean on. The best source material is your own sales calls and inboxes — the sentences real prospects use. Generic category descriptions produce generic matching.
Measurement: wire it before you spend
Install the pixel before the first dollar, and send it real funnel events — not just page views. On our own site the pixel carries the full path: page view, booking dialog opened, each step of the booking, and the lead itself with a unique event id, so the platform optimizes against people who book calls rather than people who click. Landing URLs carry campaign and ad ids, and the landing page stores them with the lead, so every booked call traces back to the ad that bought it.
AI-referred traffic converts unusually well when the match is right — Ahrefs measured AI-referred visitors converting at 23 times the rate of organic in their own funnel. The corollary: sloppy measurement wastes a channel whose economics are currently in the advertiser's favour.
What early advertisers are learning
The auction is young. Inventory is priced well below what equivalent intent costs on mature platforms, and most creative in the system is repurposed search or social copy that reads wrong inside a conversation. Ads written for the moment — acknowledging what the person is trying to figure out — visibly outperform.
Treat it like any young channel: start with a budget you can afford to learn with, test two or three genuinely different angles, and judge on cost per qualified conversation after a few weeks, not cost per click after a few days.
How much do ChatGPT ads cost?
There is no honest fixed number — it is an auction, and it is early. What we can say from running it: current costs per qualified lead compare favourably to mature search advertising for the intents we buy. Budget for a learning period and measure to the booked call, not the click.
Do ChatGPT ads affect what ChatGPT says about my business organically?
No. Paid placements and organic answers are separate systems. If you want the organic side — being named in the answer itself — that is AEO work: mentions, freshness, answer-first content. The two compound well but neither buys the other.
Can I run ChatGPT ads myself?
Yes — the platform is self-serve, and a capable in-house marketer can operate it. The places agencies earn their fee are the contextual targeting language, conversation-native creative, and conversion wiring. If you do it yourself, install the pixel with real funnel events first, and write context hints from real customer sentences.
Are there ads on Perplexity or Gemini too?
AI ad surfaces are opening one by one, and the roster changes quickly. Our practice is to master each surface as it opens with real spend, starting with OpenAI's platform, rather than claim every logo on day one.
